I've seen a lot of bad examples of Customer Service over the years. This week I observed a case of AWESOME C.S.: A checkout clerk named Dave.
"Huh?!" you gasp, "A clerk?" You bet. Dave has developed a rather unusual and oft underappreciated knack for engaging his customers. So, as you are checking out from what may have been an uninspiring task - grocery shopping - Dave talks to you. Yes, 'to,' not 'at,' you. He has mastered just the right mix of being personable and caring, with being in the present moment.
He noticed a distinctive clutch that one lady was carrying and gave her a complement on it. He offered to put another customer's bunch of fresh cut flowers into a sleeve, without assuming and just doing it. He noticed another customer was purchasing a snack food and asked if they wanted one left un-bagged "for the ride home." All of this came with a smile and genuine sincerity.
Yep. That's awesome service. "Keep Dave." I told the store manager. Without hesitation, he said "Oh, you betcha." You see, he knows what excellent customer service looks like, too.
By the way, the store was Trader Joe's. Find one near you.
