Are Some Customers Better Than Others?

What could make one customer better than another one?  


As your small or micro business develops, particularly in the early stages, you will be tempted to take ANY business that comes your way. Hold it right there: Give that some thought before you conclude that any and all business is good.

The oft quoted Seth Godin opined in a late October blog entry, that "Some people are better than others." Based upon his evidence, and my experience, I must agree.The people that become your customers come in many varieties; some are more valuable than others. There are those who will - as my mama used to say "worry you to death" - and therefore, cost you more to meet their needs. Still others, on the other hand, are repeat customers, sing your praises to their colleagues and friends, and pay you on time. Those are the ones that are "better" - keep them happy.


Small business owners and micro business owners cannot afford the extra investment of time or resources to keep EVERYBODY happy. Uncover and understand those traits of the better customers and what makes them so. 
  • Easier to work with.
  • No price haggling. 
  • They always love what you have or do.

Keep good records and reward them. The better customers are the ones that will keep you in business - through good times and downturns.
